It seems that Thief and Covet, due to an attempt to place the stolen item into the user's item slot, don't work on items that can't actually be equipped in said slot normally, such as pearls, big pearls, pearl strings, etc. Now, admittedly, my explanation for this is just a theory, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the offending factor, here.
